I generally avoid attending light music programs where old classics are performed by different vocalists. The memories associated with these timeless songs are so deeply rooted that the original singers' voices and exact melodies remain unforgettable. While this stance might seem biased, live performances occasionally offer wonderful surprises where a new artist delivers a rendition even more beautiful than the original. For instance, I vividly recall the title song of an old Marathi television serial that was performed far better by the new singer than by the original established singer. My intention is not simply to romanticize yesteryear vocalists or criticize newcomers; rather, it is to emphasize the importance of originality, variety, and the unique personal style that every artist should strive to cultivate.
Frequently, when performing famous tracks, singers overlook the natural limitations of their own vocal range. Not every vocalist can comfortably replicate a song in its original, higher pitch. In a misguided attempt to capture the original track's impact, performers often end up straining or screaming, which ultimately strips the song of its inherent beauty. Repeating this mistake over a prolonged period can permanently damage an artist's distinctive voice. Conversely, if singers take the time to truly understand their unique vocal strengths, they can wisely select material that complements their natural abilities.
Whether in singing or voice-over, if every aspiring artist strives exclusively to sound Famous Personalities, singers, actors, the industry will simply be flooded with copycats.
While it is essential to have role models for inspiration, guidance, and artistic direction, a true artist must ultimately respect their own potential. By remaining aware of personal limitations, an individual can develop a signature style and build a dedicated audience. One of the most rewarding aspects of the voice-over industry is that voices are rarely labeled simply as "good" or "bad." Instead, the unique quality of every individual voice is celebrated. Rather than blindly following in someone else's footsteps, our focus should always be on embracing and refining the distinct gifts we already possess.
It is the awareness that the voice artist should have about the timbre of his voice and accordingly to have the judgement of where his or her voice will be perfectly suitable. Ultimately my voice is my personality. If I imitate my idols, I might insult my own potential. So respect the originality and uniqueness of your voice and perform.
